Smile Train

Today i happened to read an article on SmileTrain in The Hindu.Smiletrain is a attempt of charity to increase awareness about cleft lip deformity .People with this deformity in India are considered as curse of God as the generally held belief is that it cant be cured.Though now it needs just a 45 min surgery that would cost 12000rs the lack of awareness and poverty prevalent in rural india has impeded the cure of this condtion and has ensured its prevalence in extreme rural pockets of the world .The aim of smiletrain is to educate local surgeons to perform the surgery and to create awareness. Almost 1100 hospitals in 77 countries with 170 from india have associated the campaign making it quite a successfull endeavour .
The surgical removal of cleft lip has a remarkable effect on the individuals life .It helps the person to overcome the social stigma and isolation originating out of it. The documentry
smile pinky which went on to win various awards shows how the life of a little girl changes after the surgical removal of her cleft lip, bringing a smile to her face. This attempt is a noble one and we should all support it as it is the least that we can do to bring a smile to a person
